Hurricane Melissa: A Catastrophic Impact
In late October 2025, one of the most powerful Atlantic storms ever recorded left a path of unimaginable destruction across the Caribbean. This is the story of the storm’s fury, its devastating human cost, and the ongoing efforts to recover and rebuild.
A Meteorological Titan
Category at Landfall
Melissa made landfall in Jamaica as a catastrophic Category 5 hurricane.
Max Sustained Winds
The storm rapidly intensified over unusually warm waters, producing devastating winds (295 kph).
The Devastation: Impact by Nation
Jamaica: Ground Zero
As the site of the storm’s Category 5 landfall, Jamaica’s western parishes, particularly St. Elizabeth, were described as “ground zero.” The destruction of core infrastructure was immediate and widespread.
Over 77% of the island was left without electricity, hampering rescue efforts and communications.

Haiti: A Compounded Crisis
While not a direct hit, Melissa’s rain bands stalled over Haiti, unleashing catastrophic floods that tragically swept away entire homes in Petit-Goâve and exacerbated a dire humanitarian situation.

A Deadly Combination

The storm contaminated water sources, creating the terrifying and immediate specter of a widespread cholera outbreak in a nation already facing severe instability.
Cuba: Mass Evacuation
Cuba’s renowned civil defense system was activated, mitigating the human toll from the Category 3 landfall near Santiago de Cuba. The primary impact was on infrastructure and agriculture.
This well-executed plan unequivocally prevented a much larger loss of life as the storm brought down power lines and blocked roads.

The Global Response & How You Can Help
Ongoing Rescue & Restoration
Local emergency crews, soldiers, and citizen volunteers are the front line, working in harrowing conditions to clear roads and search for survivors.
International Aid

- United Kingdom pledges initial £2.5 million in emergency funding
- Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) coordinating regional response
Humanitarian Relief
NGOs are on the ground, mobilizing to distribute life-saving essentials:
- Red Cross (Shelter, First Aid)
- World Food Programme (WFP) (Emergency Food)
- Project HOPE (Medical Supplies)
- Water Mission (Clean Water, Sanitation)
How You Can Make a Difference
The need for support is urgent and will be long-lasting. Relief organizations have stated that cash donations are the most effective way to help, as they are flexible, fast, and support local economies.
1. Donate to Reputable Organizations
- Jamaica Red Cross
- Project HOPE
- Catholic Relief Services
- Give Directly
2. Raise Awareness
In the coming weeks, as the storm fades from the headlines, there is a risk of “disaster fatigue.” Use your voice on social media to share factual information and emphasize the long road to recovery. This sustained awareness is crucial for global support.

A Global Initiative
Through extensive research and collaboration with local communities, marine scientists, and meteorologists we’ve developed a comprehensive approach to getting aid where it is needed most. By pre-positioning relief supplies based on forecasting data, we have been able to cut response times drastically. More resources means more relief and less uncertainty.
%
Over 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered by oceans, making them the planet’s largest habitat.
Over 500 wells dug in communities across multiple countries, providing reliable access to clean water.
More than 1.5 million gallons of clean water generated annually through our sustainable water projects. This is in addition to the millions in pre-packaged water provided through direct aid.
Our local Coral Reef Restoration project aims to revitalize degraded coral reefs in Miami through a combination of coral transplantation, artificial reef structures, & community involvement. Ensuring access to future generations.
